My backyard garden project has been on hold for the last few months while Father Winter does his thing (or in the case of Southern Ontario, tries to do his thing). This weekend my husband and I sat down and made a plan for our future backyard space. While we might not be able to accomplish everything this spring/summer season, it is fun to dream!
This photo was taken in September while I was mapping out the sunlight in my backyard. I do have the challenge of a North facing space which limits what vegetables and herbs I can plant. That being said I’ve never let a challenge stop me!
And here is the plan! As you can see we have a fairly small space (17 feet x 23 feet), but using the techniques of square foot gardening and companion planting I can still yield lots of herbs and veggies. The planned flower bed on the west is almost completely in the shade. That being said there are lots of options for shade herbs!
- Wild ginger
- Sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum)
- Spicebush (Lindera benzoin)
- Viola
- Herb Robert
- Bloodroot
- Jack-In-the-Pulpit
Square foot garden Box A. Based on my sunlight mapping in September, this box will receive the least amount of light (approximately 3-4 hours).
Square foot garden Box B. This box will get about 4+ hours of sunlight daily.
Square foot garden Box C, which will receive the most amount of light daily (5-6+ hours daily).
Well there you have it folks! The plan for my very first backyard space. Any and all suggestions, comments and questions are more than welcome. I am new to backyards and to gardening.
Peace,
Correne
